hi this is Lindsay and in this tutorial we're going to take a look at how to get started with infographics ingenially in this tutorial we'll cover logging in and creating your project with genially adding content to your creation the next steps for your assignment and sharing and publishing your project logging in and creating your project with genially so to get started you'll click on the link that will be available in your d2l shell otherwise you can search genially.com online and click on the login button there are a number of ways that you can sign in i'm going to sign in with google because our tmu accounts are google accounts you could choose to sign in with your toronto mu.ca email address i'm going to use my personal gmail account but whichever you choose is up to you and then say continue next you'll see that you're brought to the genially dashboard this is where we'll begin to set up our project for this assignment genially has a number of templates that you can use but for this specific project we'd like to start from a blank template the best way to do that is to click on create genially and from the drop down menu we'll select blank creation this will bring up a new panel where we can begin to select the size of our canvas you'll notice that there was a pop-out window on the right-hand side and this is where we'll set the dimensions the first step is to click on the slider next to maintain proportions this will let us enter any dimensions that we want for this assignment we're going to be doing 400 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall once you enter the numbers you'll hit apply custom size and you'll see the size of the canvas change in the middle adding content to your creation before i go too much further i'm actually going to give my project a name so up here in the field where it says untitled genially i'm going to call it world's best cookies once i click off that new name will be saved for my project to begin adding content we have a number of options down the left-hand sidebar let's start at the bottom and we'll look at background here you have options to add either a color to your background you can upload an image of your own or you can take a look at some of the images that are available in the library these images are all copyright free and available for you to use for my project i'm going to choose a color to do that i'll click on the button here and i could choose to enter a hexadecimal number from my branding kit if that's something i've already created or i can select using the color picker and then add the hexadecimal number to my branding kit after i'm going to pick something in this range here you'll also notice that once you add a color it gets added to recent colors and makes it easier for you to select this later if you wanted to select an image instead you could simply click show more scroll or search through and then if you find something you like you just click to apply it and you'll see that appear in the background i'll just reset this to the color that i was using i'll click on recent colors and you'll see the background change again the next thing i'll do is add some text to my document so clicking on the text tool you'll see that you have a variety of different preset styles that you can choose from i often start here the basic text block this lets me enter anything i want and then i can play around with font size style all of those things so let's start by adding my title text i'm going to call this world's best cookies and then it will be my ingredient list once i've typed in my text i can click to drag this field around you just want to make sure that you see the little compass there and i want this to appear up at the top of the page you can also use the handles to make the text box fit within the canvas and you'll see that you get some guides when you're moving it around now i want to customize the font size and the font itself so i can select all of the text and then come to the toolbar at the top of the screen and select a font you'll notice there are a whole bunch of fonts to choose from and this does include most of the google fonts so let's search for something i'm going to choose lato and you'll see that the font changed next i want to adjust the size and make it a little bit bigger i can do this by clicking on font size and selecting a number but i can also do it by grabbing on the handle and moving it back and forth once i'm happy with the size i'll set that and next we could change the font colors so there are a couple of things that you could do you could highlight everything and click on the font color tool to select something that was in your recent colors or again use the color picker or the hexadecimal numbers to select something and then if i click off you'll see that the font color has changed you also have the option to select just a couple of the words and set those to a different color these aren't the best colors and you'll want to make sure that everything is accessible as well so i'm actually just going to change this to white now we'd like to begin adding some images or icons onto this document i'm going to click on resources and here you'll see you have access to images you've got shapes you've got icons and other illustrations there's a number of resources that are built into the system and you can use anything you see here i'm going to start by using some of the icons and we'll take a look at how to upload your own images shortly so to start i know that i want to use some icons and i'll search for eggs i can select this icon here and because it was one of the icons in the system you can also change the color of these so if you come up to the top toolbar and click on color you could again select something from your recent color panel or you could use the color picker or hexadecimal field grabbing on the handles of any of these icons allows you to adjust the size i'm just going to add a couple more in here and i'll click to place them on the canvas you'll see as i drag them around that i get these grid lines so this can help me with aligning images with one another and getting them into positions that i like next i may want to add a little bit of text to title what these items are so i'll click to add a text field and i'll say eggs here i want to change the font color to match with everything else and then i'm going to use the handles to adjust you can also do things like copy a field and then paste it so that you get the same formatting for the text i'll just finish adding these in now i'll play around with the placement a little bit until i have everything where i like it i'm looking at my title now and i don't like that it's left aligned when everything else is centered on the document so i can click on this field and choose the paragraph style here i'm going to choose centered and you'll see it centers the title up on the canvas i also mentioned that we would take a look at how to upload an image of your own so i want to get an image of some cookies i'm going to use the noun project which is a whole collection of icons and things that you can use it's free to sign up for an account and i just used my gmail account the one catch is that when you're using a free account the image does include an attribution so let's come here and search for cookies and see what we find i like this image here so i'll click on quick view and get this icon now i have to choose the one that says attribution required because i have a free account and i'll say get this icon i'm going to select the download png and it saved it to my downloads folder i'm going to come back to my geniela project and come to insert here this allows me to upload an image from my device and i'll select the cookies once i say open it now appears on the canvas of my page i can grab the handle again to move the cookies around the one thing you'll notice is because this is an image that i've pulled in i'm not able to change the color of it it's because it was an image that was imported you can also select multiple items at a time by clicking and dragging your cursor over everything now i can move them as a group and i'm just going to move it all slightly lower on the page another thing we can do is look at the position or arrangement of the items so let's say i wanted to move my cookies to sort of appear here under my title right now they're sitting on top of it so it's kind of covering the word list if i come back up to the top toolbar there's a button that says put in order clicking on this allows me to select where this item appears in terms of its arrangement with the title so right now it's sitting on top and i want to move it behind you may have to click it a few times depending on how you built your layers you can see that the cookies popped behind the list word there and i now have the arrangement that i want again i could play with the size of these now that the arrangement is right and get them where i want them next steps for your assignment as part of this assignment you're required to create three separate infographics now that i have one created i'm going to start the second to do that you'll want to come back to the genially panel that we started on and we're going to duplicate from our first project so you'll see here that i have a draft of world's best cookies if i click on the three dots for the option menu i have an option to duplicate this will create a copy of the infographic that i just made you'll want to make sure that each one of the infographics for your assignment appears as a separate project now i'll hover over the copy that i made and i'll click edit i'm going to give this a new name and it can be world's best cookies instructions and on this one i will create a new infographic for how to bake the cookies so i'm just going to change my title here so that it says instructions i'm okay with leaving the cookie icon where it is but i'll start to move around some of my icons now we want to add in some text for the instructions another point i'd like to note is that here when you have a text box and the text is highlighted you'll see a button for ai options this does let you use some of the ai tools built into genially but as a journalist you should be very careful about using ai to generate text really this should be something you're writing yourself however we did want to note that the ai options do exist within genially so here i'll say gather your ingredients okay again we're going to change the font color and we'll change the size a little bit you can see here when i pull in the middle handle on the side it helps me wrap the text i'm just gonna finish adding step two in and now i have my second infographic created you'll go on and repeat this to create a third infographic publishing and sharing your project there are a few final steps that you'll need to complete for this assignment one of those steps is to take screenshots to share on peer scholar on a pc there's a snipping tool that you can use to do this so i just search snipping you'll see the tool pop up i'll click new and then i can use the handles to take a screenshot of my entire infographic i would then save this and i could share and upload it to pure scholar on a mac if you hold down command shift and the number four this will give you the same crosshairs you just saw on the pc tool to be able to select your infographic and take a screenshot once you've completed this step you'll also need to publish your project in order to get the embed code to do that you'll need to go into each of your infographics so i'm going to come back to the genially panel and i'll look at the first infographic i created i'm clicking on edit and now i'll click on the share button that appears in the very top right of the screen this will bring up a window asking me to publish my project so i'll want to make sure that it says public online and if you haven't entered a title or you need to adjust it you can do that here once you're happy with everything you'll click all set and you'll see a new window appear it automatically brings you to the link screen but you're going to be looking for insert here you'll want to click the copy button next to the iframe code once that code has been copied to your clipboard you'll now need to go to your jblog and add in the embed code if you need help on how to add embed codes onto a blog you'll want to have a look at the tutorial on using the custom html block remember you'll need to complete this process for each of the three infographics that you created each one of those embed codes will be added to your blog as a separate custom html block so this is what's included in creating infographics on Genially. tutorials thanks for watching
